St. Ignatius was appointed the third Bishop and Patriarch of Antioch about 59 A.D, and was a student of St. John. He was made Bishop of St. Peter himself. He suffered martyrdom in Rome under the persecution of Trajan. On his way to Rome, he wrote a number of letters, which are some of the earliest and richest. His writings pertain to marriage, the Eucharist, and the Incarnation. His name is mentioned in the book of Romans. Of Syrian origin, little is known of his life before his last journey on foot from Antioch to Rome, where he was to be executed for being a Christian. On his way, many churches sent representatives out to talk with him. He encourgaged them in their faith and strengthened the churches, sending letters back to them. Seven of these letters survived, (thanks to St. Polycarp) in which he urged unity among Christians through the Eucharist and the local bishop. In his letter to the Romans, he calls himself Theophore (God-bearer), so convinced was he of the presence of Christ within him. He was thrown to the lions in the Coliseum on December 20, 107 during the reign of Emperor Trajan. En route to martydom in Rome, he wrote a series of letters which have been preserved as an example of very little Christian theology. St. Ignatius along with Clement of Rome and Polycarp of Smyrna, is one of the chief Apostolic Fathers who knew the apostles personally. His feast day is observed on December 20 in the Orthodox Church.
