Self discipline and self control are the keys to a spiritual and Christian life. Being disciplined or controlled from without is not beneficial spiritually or morally. The whole structure of Orthodox Christian disciplines and worship is designed to help us develop self discipline and self control. If every one in a nation had developed such virtues, there would be no need for police forces or prisons.
