Parish History

Saint George Russian Orthodox Church in Cincinnati began in the 1940’s. After World War II there were over 100 parishioners. The parish diminished throughout the next couple of decades as people moved away. By the early 1980’s the parish was closed; the icons and sacred items stored away. Then, in the late 1980’s, several Orthodox Christians, seeking a more traditional Church petitioned Archbishop Alypy of Chicago to start a parish in Cincinnati. When it came time to select a patron Saint, the name of the Holy Great Martyr George was, by God’s will, once again chosen. So, the parish that was closed just a few years before, was revived under the shield of Saint George.

Since then the parish has been growing steadily, with new faces appearing almost every Sunday. By God’s grace, there are more than a hundred faithful attending our parish now. Most of our new members are recent immigrants from Russia, Ukraine and Georgia. About half of our parishioners are American converts. Therefore our services are conducted in Slavonic and English. Due to the happy circumstance of our small church building being crowded most of the time, we have made plans to build a traditional Russian Orthodox Church. It will be the first one in the Cincinnati area. We have purchased land in the charming community of Loveland, Ohio. We are all very inspired and eager with our plans. Our parishioners have made an outstanding commitment towards building it, and we are reaching out to the community to assist in the enormous cost of building it.
