The Saint Edward Brotherhood was established at Brookwood in 1982 to prepare and care for the Church in which the sacred relics of Saint Edward the Martyr were to be enshrined. A small monastic community, which we hope will increase, chants the services of the Church daily at the Shrine, and their numbers are augmented on Sundays and feastdays by a number of Orthodox believers who form a mission parish. The monastery is located on St. Cyprian’s Avenue, Brookwood, Surrey GU24 0BL, England.

Since the schism of the Roman Church in the eleventh century there has been no indigenous Orthodox Church in this country, and so those English people who have turned to Orthodoxy have, of necessity joined one of the Churches from Eastern Europe which have established parishes here: the Greek, Russian and Serbian Orthodox Churches. Our community is under the spiritual direction of Metropolitan Cyprian of Oropos and Fili. In receiving and enshrining the sacred relics of Saint Edward the Martyr, however, we bear witness to the fact that for many centuries the light of Orthodoxy shone in these isles, and we look back with gratitude and filial piety not only to the spiritual heritage of the Russian Orthodox peoples, whose witness has kindled a love of Orthodoxy in our hearts again, but also to the spiritual athletes of our own land, who shone forth in piety in the first ten centuries of the Christian era.

Visitors to Saint Edward Brotherhood are welcome, but we ask you to phone or email us beforehand as this will help us to arrange our schedule. The best time to phone is between 11:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. We ask you not to phone after 9:00 p.m. (unless it is urgent), as we are then retiring for reading, prayer, and rest. We are unable to answer the telephone whilst church services are in progress.

The Saint Edward Brotherhood is dependent solely upon the freewill offerings of the faithful and of friends. We invite you to help us by sending donations to the above address. All who contribute more than £100.00 will receive the Brotherhood’s monthly magazine The Shepherd.

Donations by cheque may be sent to the Brotherhood postal address, made out to King Edward Orthodox Trust Co Ltd. If you are an UK tax payer, please ask for a Gift Aid form, as we can then reclaim the tax that you have already paid on your donation and thus increase its worth.

Hand-dipped candles and incense for home use are available from the Brotherhood, which also provides a bookbindery service.

Grave spaces in the Orthodox Cemetery at Brookwood are available for Orthodox Christians and their spouses, and are presently priced at £750 for a single space and £1000 for a double space. Fuller details are available from the Brotherhood on request. Please write giving your full name and address, and the name of your parish church. All cheques should be made payable to King Edward Orthodox Trust Company Limited.
